“Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.” — Dr. Maya Angelou
Dear Fellow Warrior,
This is a piece for International Women’s Day and America’s Women’s History Month. I wrote this piece for all the sisters who never give up, who try, who aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves and for other sisters, and who dare greatly.
How Dare She
How dare she dream when they told her she couldn’t…
How dare she take a chance when they said she didn’t have one…
How dare she rise when they wanted her to shrink…
How dare she write when they didn’t provide the medium…
How dare she love when they chose to hate her…
How dare she speak when they silence her…
How dare she fight when they suppress her…
How dare she fearlessly embrace her fire, rage, and passion…
How dare she smile with grace, warmth, and sincerity…
How dare she unapologetically choose authenticity…
How dare she wear a hijab…
How dare she take it off…
How dare she have ideas…
How dare she choose between career or children…
How dare she choose between education or marriage…
How dare she stand tall in their holy land…
How dare she refuse to conform to mediocrity and cowardice…
How dare she name the injustices and stigmas they wish to hide…
How dare she defy the evil eyes.
How dare she refuse to dim her light…
How dare she call herself a Warrior Queen…
How dare she claim her rightful place, her throne…
How dare she try to make a difference…
How dare she refuse to walk alone…
How dare she walk alone anyway, when they refused to walk with her…
How dare she refuse to remain misunderstood…
How dare she befriend the Moon…
How dare she try to change her stars and rewrite her story…
How dare she rise above all adversity…
How dare she overcome the pain, hurt, grief, and suffering…
How dare she build a door when they had closed them all on her…
How dare she heal when they scarred her…
How dare she shine when they made life harder than it needed to be…
How dare she live, unshackled, unchained, in defiance of conformity…
How dare she stay resilient, empowered, and connected…
How dare she fetch her Sword…a pen?
She dares. She dares greatly.
And with the blessing of the Almighty.
She will dare indefinitely.
