Your Silence Speaks…

Featured Photo: “Can You Hear Us” painted on Christmas Day, December 25, 2023, inspired by the Tunisian Artist Omar Esstar’s “Scream from Gaza.”

Dear Fellow Warrior,

This poem addresses the deafening silence towards the genocide of our Palestinian brothers and sisters, which we have witnessed in the past nearly three months. It was cathartic to write this. I have been channeling the words of many revolutionaries the past several months especially. And these words of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were among the first that came to mind in October. These are the words that always emerge in my mind whenever the bombs drop on Gaza:

“In the end we will remember, not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Here is my poem. Thank you for reading.

Your Silence Speaks

******

Your Silence Speaks...

Louder than roaring oceans.

Above the gunshots, bombs, and explosions.

Louder than the sounds of screaming, bleeding children…

With incessant commotions

It tells me stories that can’t be unheard.

Shields the truth without a word.

******

Your silence tells me things you don’t want me to know.

*******

All the hidden fears.

As you choose to safeguard the lies, fueling our tears.

Your silence conceals the cries of those in need.

Burying the wounds that bleed.

In this quiet, your choice is made.

A preference for comfort, when you have a voice to raise.

You have chosen your peace.

That is crystal clear.

Discarding names of the innocence you fear.

Your silence speaks your upspoken truth.

*****

Simply that: “business as usual” trumps the speech that could save humanity.

*****

Yet this silence cannot hide the pain.

Or the cries of those we neglect in disdain.

Your silence does not spare details.

Unveiling the truth that never fails.

*****

You cover your ears when you hear the cries, wails, and screams.

You cover your eyes from the deaths of thousands of children with big dreams.

You cover your mouth when they plead for help.

*****

You hide behind the blanket of lies when we tell you that WE are ALL Indigenous.

You don’t understand when you deny our humanity… You deny yours too

You don’t have the courage, the intellect, the brave heart to embrace this truth.

You can’t feel mercy and compassion beyond the radius of your being.

****

You deny the value of the Indigenous Soul.

Seeking to condemn what has made us whole.

****

Amid death and destruction, You stand.

****

Your silence speaks… it tells me everything.

Your choice to turn your cheek to a massacre.

*****

A chilling truth…

Injustice has concealed…

Demolished by youth.

*****

I fear for you.

Because if History Repeats.

As it has…

History may never be kind to you.

****

As silence shields what conscience keeps.

A plea for the soul, a call to see…

The wounded scars this silence can only decree.

*****

But behind the veil of quiet despair,

Empathy can rise, Hearts can repair.

Your mouth remains shut, as shattered souls respond.

****

Let your compassion rise, beyond the lies.

Let it in, and open your eyes.

Break the chains of your mute disguise.

Speak…Speak… Speak up, Amreeka.

Speak Now. Speak Yesterday. Speak Tomorrow.

Let us never again be afraid to “Speak Truth to Power.”

*****

Because when you speak, our hearts can mend.

The bloodshed can finally end.

The wicked will cease to pretend…

Your silence speaks, but YOU can too, my friend.

Let your voice heal this broken world…

PLEASE, let the suffering end.

******

In Solidarity, Peace, Warmth, and Blessings,

Your Sister, Dr. Elsa
